Congratulations to the Home Water Saving Device project, a smart, connected water-saving siphon, the winner of the Prix Francis Leboeuf 2023!
For this 2023 edition, fourteen Study Projects (SP) groups had been pre-selected by the project advisors and the presidents of the final defense jury. Each project report was read by the prize jury.
A jury comprising Michel Géron, Didier Lacour, Jean-Jacques Sinou, Grégory Vial, Cécile Poquet, Bertrand Vilquin, Christophe Corre, Michel Roger, Stéphane Derrode, Fabrice Dassenoy and Damien Constant, selected the four overall winners, whose names were announced at the awards ceremony on Wednesday, September 13, 2023.
SP: learning project management
Study Projects (SP) enable first-year engineering students to learn how to carry out a project from start to finish, in line with the client's requirements. Students (divided into groups of 5 or 6) are presented with a scientific or technical problem in one of the School's areas of expertise. They are supervised by a teaching team comprising scientific tutors, communication and project management advisors. Partner companies and research laboratories may also be involved in defining subjects in cooperation with the École's teaching teams.

HOME WATER SAVING DEVICE (TriPhon)
Congratulations to the overall winner, SP 17, who takes first place with the project: "Home Water Saving Device: a smart, connected siphon for saving water."
In a world facing the challenges of climate change and population growth, preserving water resources and reducing waste are crucial. That's why five young engineers from Centrale Paris have created TriPhon, an innovation that revolutionizes water management in our kitchens.
TriPhon in brief:
Separation of waste and clean water: TriPhon is an innovative siphon capable of separating waste water from clean water, enabling large quantities of water to be reused for a variety of purposes.
Saving precious water: In France, each individual uses an average of 150 liters of water a day, with only 1% destined for hydration. TriPhon aims to reduce this waste by recovering and reusing water.
You can follow this innovative approach to a more sustainable and responsible future on the team's LinkedIn : TriPhon.
Reconstruction of a Roman stone-throwing ballista
This Study Project (SP) consisted in taking the previous year's SP work and putting it into practice. This year, they chose to materialize and test their ballista, a mechanical device used to launch projectiles.
The students applied their engineering knowledge to the design and manufacture of the ballista. They worked on various aspects of the project, including design, material selection, manufacturing and testing. Their work resulted in a functional ballista, capable of launching projectiles with precision and power.
In addition to researching and understanding ancient techniques and know-how, this project also contributes to the transmission and preservation of our heritage. Indeed, the ballista was presented at regional historical events such as the European Archaeology Days, in partnership with the Musée Lugdunum.
Acoustics in H10's TP room
The students in this SP found that there was continuous white noise in TP room H10, reaching up to 70 decibels. This noise was very disturbing for the students during their practical work.
To solve this problem, the students undertook an in-depth study of sound propagation in the room. They used measurement tools and simulations to understand how sound propagated, and identified areas where insulation was insufficient. Thanks to this study, the students were able to propose solutions for reducing sound reverberation in the room. In particular, they recommended the installation of a false ceiling, which would attenuate sound reflections and improve acoustic insulation. This proposal for a false ceiling was supported by simulations that demonstrated its potential effectiveness.
The students were thus able to provide a concrete solution to the sound insulation problem in TP room H10.
Upgrading ECLAIR's server room
For this SP, the students set up a tablet-based system that allows them to view the status of the servers of the ECLAIR computer association, in real time.
Thanks to this tablet application, they have created an interface that displays all the important information on the servers, their status, performance, etc. This facilitates the work of the association's members, as they can react quickly to any malfunctions.
Francis Lebœuf Award
In 2006, École Centrale de Lyon introduced a prize for the best Study Project (SP), to distinguish the groups whose work, approach and written report were the most deserving. As a tribute to Professor Francis Lebœuf, who passed away in 2013, the École wished to associate his name with this award.
We warmly applaud these remarkable talents who, through their actions, continue to make a positive contribution to our world. The Francis Leboeuf Award is a fitting tribute to their dedication and success.
Congratulations to our 2023 winners for their outstanding achievements. We look forward to the future contributions of this year's SPs.
